The Last Five Years
Jason Robert Brown's "The Last Five Years" is an intimate two-person musical covering five years of a relationship between an up-and-coming novelist and an aspiring actress. Much of the uniqueness of the show comes from its daring structure: Cathy is moving backward in time, starting the show at the end of her relationship with Jamie, while Jamie is moving forward. They cross in the middle for their one duet at the time of their wedding.
Director Allen Barton has reconceived the staging of the production - which normally has each actor singing mostly alone to the audience, with very little interraction between them until they have their one song together. "I wanted to see if we could pull off a concept whereby both Cathy and Jamie are on stage the whole time, communicating the whole time, affecting each other the whole time - sort of a dreamscape through which these two characters can relive moments of their relationship through these fantastic songs."
